Friday, four of us went to see Villa Lante in Bagnaia as well as the Monster Park in Bomarzo. The Villa Lante was one of my favorite things I learned about in our architectural history class way back in freshman year. The garden starts at the top as more organic and slowly progresses to a lot of geometric detailing. This was to show the progression of manmade items. The Parque di Monstri, or Monster Park, is a more organic park showcasing obscure statues and carvings. Pirro Ligoro, the architect, designed the park while venting the heartbreak of the death of his wife. The series of sculptures ranges from mythology to fantasy. Some of the pieces were huge, some were gruesome, and some were just interesting. This is the park that inspired Lewis Carroll to write Alice in Wonderland.
